To answer this simply for you, essential oils are the highly concentrated version of the plant.
Essential oils are most commonly extracted from plants by a method called steam distillation. The exception is citrus oils, which are cold pressed from the rinds of the fruit. Virtually all parts of the plant may be used for extracting essential oils, such as; flowers, roots, branches, seeds, bark, wood, leaves, stems, gum/resin, twigs and needles.
Did you know that all plants on earth contain essential oils? But only some of them can be used for healing purposes with humans and animals. The essential oils are the plants life force, allowing the plants to grow, thrive, and resist diseases. Amazingly, these essential oils, when extracted from the plants, can be used on you and me for the same reasons. And they have been for thousands of years. Research has shown that essential oils are man’s (or woman’s, for you feminists!) first form of medicine.
I’d like to give you an example of dried herbs. The fragrances you smell in herbal teas are from the plant’s essential oils. But, did you know that only about 3% of the plant’s essential oils are actually in the dried herbs? The rest of the herb is just dead plant material, to be blatantly honest, with no healing value what-so-ever.
So, instead of using herbs for healing (with only 3% therapeutic value), imagine using pure essential oils for healing, which contain 100% of the plants therapeutic value. Huge difference, right?
And get this…it usually takes the whole plant to produce a single drop of essential oil!
For instance, 1 drop of peppermint essential oil = 28 cups of peppermint tea. How’s that for healing power?
